Ascolympros, like stamnagathi, belongs to the family of asteraceae. Since the ancient times, the roots, the leaves and its tender stems were eaten. Dioscorides the famous ancient Greek doctor and farmacologist advises fresh shoots of “Sclolymno” to be eaten as asparagus.
